​A couple of weeks ago we re-installed this lovely panel after some restoration.
This window comes from Bury Grammar School, a local private school which dates back as far as 1570, and educated the likes of renowned comedian, Victoria Wood, the father of modern policing, Robert Peel and of course our very own Emily Seddon who has recently joined our team.

The stained glass was removed from Roger Kay Hall which was one of the later additions to the school, opened in 1907 so we can assume that the window is as old as that! During our research we uncovered an old photo of the Roger Kay Hall which we believe was taken approximately in the early 20th century, which depicts the stained glass we have repaired.

The century old panel was in a state of disrepair, as you can see from the photos, with some broken or missing pieces and disintegrating leads. Once it arrived in our workshop it was disassembled and each piece of glass was cleaned. To replace the broken pieces, we had to perform a bit of glass wizardry. We had some green glass that was a great colour match but it was too flat and had no texture, so we cut the correct size pieces and placed them into our glass kiln at a temperature where it would just begin to melt. This created a more organic, rippled texture to the glass as it formed to the texture of the kiln shelf.

After that, it was just a case of reassembling the window with new lead came and a good old cement and polish! The window was reinstalled and looks as good as new, ready to withstand another hundred years!

These lovely panels were existing in our customers home but required a good bit of TLC. After removal, they were brought to our studio where they were given a bit of a makeover. This began with a very good scrub, since decades old stained glass can accumulate a fair few cobwebs. Then they were treated to some new border leads as the old ones had perished over time, and often get damaged during removal.

A few of the windows also required some repairs, and this is done by removing the broken glass, gently bending the leads back and cutting to size a new piece of glass to match the old. This is then eased back into the window, and the leads are then bent and smoothed back into place, securing the new glass.

The real star of the show here is the door panel, which was made new to match the existing set. Our talented designer, Bethany, was able to draw up a design extracting elements from the original windows as well as selecting matching glass, to create something, which we think, blends in perfectly with what was already there.

We love to see our customers choosing to, not only keep their stained glass, but investing their time and money into preserving it to last many years to come.

Take a look at one of our latest completed projects. We were contacted by our customer with a view to making a replica of some existing stained glass. The original panel was a feature of our customer’s childhood home, and so they decided they wanted to take this piece of family history with them and replace like for like.

This stained glass window incorporates some intricate painted pieces as part of a shield motif. So in order to create a replica, we needed to create some identical painted pieces. Glass painting is truly a painstaking art that requires a lot of patience, especially when attempting to replicate an existing piece, but of course we happily accepted this challenge!

If you take a look at our photos, you can see that the painting is done in layers, with kiln firing in between, and is done over a period of days. It is quite a feat to ‘clone’ an example of glass painting, but we really think our talented craftspeople, Tamsin and Katie, have nailed it.

Over the past few months, we have been working on a large restoration project for The Prince of Wales Hotel in Southport.
It is a grade II listed building, located not far from the seafront, and was constructed in 1877. Over the years it has welcomed the likes of Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, as well as playing host to many a prestigious event.

Our work takes place in the hotel’s very grand looking Bamber Ballroom. It is packed with Victorian features and most importantly, has an original stained glass skylight. The glass ceiling consists of 44 individual panels, which were, unfortunately, in a state of disrepair.

Our team removed the panels and brought them back to our workshop where, one by one, the panels were carefully dismantled. Then each piece of glass was painstakingly cleaned of dirt and debris or replaced if broken, then reconstructed using new lead came. This process was completed over a few months and then came time for installation.

You might think that stained glass fitting is not what you would consider a high octane sport, but take a look at some of our photos and you will find yourselves mistaken!
The fitting of these panels took quite the logistical operation, with harnesses, ropes and a hoist system to elevate the windows into place. I think we can all agree, our excellent team deserves a round of applause for a seamless execution of a rather challenging project.

We feel extremely privileged to be undertaking this work on such a historic building, when so many others like it face a lack of funding and become derelict. How fantastic it is to be able to conserve history, and extend the longevity of this beautiful glass ceiling, which will, hopefully, last another 150 years.

Today is International Women’s Day 2026, and this year, it feels more important than ever.

Women make up less than 15% of the workforce in the construction industry and this is for a number of reasons. This kind of work can often be viewed as not ‘women’s work’ and maybe that women aren’t strong enough or capable of carrying out jobs in this sector. As well as this, safety equipment and clothing is often made and designed to fit men, making it difficult for women to access proper PPE.

But here at The Stained Leaded Glass Company, we are proud to say more than half of our staff are very capable women. So please join us in celebrating the women that make our business a great one and take a look at some of our ‘women’s work’.

This lovely project was finished just before Christmas, and now, on our first day back in cold, snowy weather, the swallows in the design feel like a promise of spring to come.
The customer was delighted with the finished result, and we really enjoyed working closely with them to bring their ideas to life.

It can often be said that inspiration can come from the most unexpected of places, and the same can be said for this stained glass panel.

After receiving a lovely Christmas card, our customer was extremely taken with the design on the front, so much so that we used it as inspiration to create a design for some new stained glass.

This beautiful piece features a spectrum of blues, including a special glass called flashed glass. This is a kind of glass that is clear with a layer of colour on one side, which we have sandblasted to create stars in the night sky. This is a technique we have used in other projects but we think creates a fantastic effect! The star of the show is a mid flight barn owl, soaring past a glowing full moon with lots wispy glass to create the look of feathers.

What wonderful character this window now adds to our customer’s front door, to be enjoyed day or night!

As we say goodbye to to the final flutters of summer, we wanted to share a little bit of sunshine (before it disappears for months).

Take a look at this lovely sunflower panel recently completed by our talented craftsperson; Katie. The window features two big sunflowers comprised of some beautiful streaky glass. As you can see, there is a brown glass border which acts as a frame, enhanced by the wispiness of the glass, mimicking a wood grain effect.

Our client left us a glowing review:
