History of Lancashire Stained Glass
Lancashire has many historic buildings that house beautiful stained glass that dates back many years. This page will showcase some of these places, which we have had the pleasure to work on.
Lancaster Priory
Lancaster Priory, formerly known as Prior Church of St Mary is the Church of England Parish Church of Lancaster. It is a grade 1 listed building and is located near to Lancaster Castle. The priory has a long history dating back to the 11th century. With another church on the same site recorded as early as 630 AD. Over the years the parish has had much renovation and rebuilding work carried out, Although most of the current church dates back to the 15th century, a lot of the fitments were kept, such as the choir stalls, which, which date back to 1310. In the past, we have had the opportunity to work at the church to fit wire guards over the windows to protect the historic stained glass. |
Makinson Arcade, Wigan
Wigan has three shopping arcades and has managed to retain the traditionally glazed buildings to this day. Makinson Arcade is the second oldest arcade in Wigan, which was built in 1898. In recent years the arcades have been restored to provide attractive shopping facilities. A few years ago we undertook restoration work on the stained glass in the entryway of the arcade. We removed, cleaner and repaired the stained glass before refitting it above the doorway to the arcade.
Makinson Arcade (1897 Heaton, Ralph and Heaton) in brick and terracotta with French and English Renaissance features. Notice the shaped gable, the urn finials on the roofline, the arched windows and decorative frame and stained, leaded glass above the entrance. The ornate canopy was added in 1996.
