Encapsulation of Old Stained Glass and Leaded Lights
- We will endeavour to refurbish your old stained glass and leaded light panels to the best of our ability; however, it must be understood that it may not be possible or desirable to make the panels look like new.
- Cleaning: We will clean all the glass and leads thoroughly. Every lead will be scored around using a pointed hardwood dowel and spots of paint removed. Some marks, scratches and paint spots may remain on the glass.
- Replacement of Broken Glass Pieces: Every effort will be made to match up the broken glass for colour and texture; however, it may not be possible to replace obsolete glass with an exact match. In these circumstances, we will use the nearest available match. We cannot accept liability for breakage of old glass during refurbishment, in this instance the broken piece will be replaced with the nearest match available.
- Refurbishment of Old Lead: We will polish the old leads using black carbon polish, but the panels will not be releaded unless requested. This will be at an additional cost.
- Original Glass: Small scratches, blemishes, surface marks, edge shells, and very small corner cracks in the original glass will not be replaced unless specifically requested. Attempting to repair may worsen the condition of the window. Many old glasses are now obsolete, making it difficult to match colour or texture.
- Original Leaded Light Cement Dust: Although every care is taken with cleaning and blowing out of dust from old panels, there may still be some small particles of dust or cement debris inside the encapsulated unit.
- Encapsulation Size Limit: The maximum size of a singular stained glass panel that we can encapsulate is 1.3m². Units larger than this size cannot be guaranteed,
- Low E Glass: Low E coated glass provides improved insulation when used as part of a double-glazed unit necessary to comply with building regulations. Double and triple-glazed units made using Low E glass may appear to have a white/blue haze under certain lighting conditions, such as direct bright sunshine, especially with a darkened background. This is a normal feature of Low E coated glass and not a flaw.
- Condensation in Encapsulated Units: Condensation may appear inside encapsulated stained glass units when first installed. This will normally disappear within a few weeks.
New Stained Glass
- Glass Colours/Textures: When making new stained glass panels, the true colours and textures of the glass will not be exactly as shown on the computerised mock-up. This is for illustrative purposes only. Photos of the glass samples can be sent by email if required, or you can arrange to visit our studio to look at the glass in person.
- Lines/Textures/Bubbles in New Glass: We use many varieties of coloured glass, some of which have irregularities in the pattern, including lines, bubbles, irregular textures, and reams. These are not flaws, scratches, or marks but rather natural features of the glass.
- Solder Joints: Stained glass is a handmade product, and as such, the solder joints can vary in appearance.
- Design Fees: We try our very best to obtain a detailed idea of the design you are hoping to achieve before we begin any design artwork for new stained glass panels. We are happy to make minor alterations to the design or colours to ensure you are completely happy before we make the stained glass. This is limited to two alterations. If more are required or a new design altogether, an additional design fee will be incurred.
- Glass Selection: Based on our experience and style, we have acquired a standard range of colours and textures of glasses that we use in new designs. If a particular colour or texture outside of this range is required, an additional fee will be incurred.
Guarantees
- Double and Triple Glazed Units: Guaranteed for 5 years for the seal on the unit breaking down. This will be evident if condensation appears inside the unit.
- If the unit has been glazed by us, the guarantee covers the full cost of removal, splitting, resealing, and refitting.
- If the unit has been supplied but not glazed, this guarantee is limited to the cost of the unit being split and resealed. No delivery costs, removal, and refitting costs are covered.
- This guarantee is only valid if the units have been glazed correctly. The units must be supported on both the inside and outside pane on packing blocks. If the frame is timber, then it must be glazed using a butyl putty or tape and capped inside and out using a low modulus neutral cure glazing silicon designed for glazing double-glazed units.
- The guarantee is only valid if the encapsulated unit does not exceed the maximum recommended size of 1.3m².
