At our workshop, we love combining the timeless beauty of traditional stained glass with the benefits of modern technology. Recently, we had the privilege of doing just that in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham, where we transformed a stunning bay window and the front and back doors of a charming period home. Our project involved carefully restoring, cleaning, and encapsulating the original stained glass panels into triple-glazed units. This technique is one of our specialities and offers the best of both worlds: retaining the unique character of stained glass while significantly improving insulation.
What Makes This Process Unique? For this home, the encapsulated units were retrofitted into timber frames. To secure them in place, we used Tricoya face beading—a sustainable reprocessed timber material with a 50-year anti-rot guarantee. This approach ensures durability and environmental responsibility without compromising the aesthetic. A Seamless Transformation. If you look at the before-and-after photos from this project, you might not notice a dramatic change—and that’s precisely the point! Our goal is to seamlessly reinstate the original design while discreetly upgrading the functionality. The result? A home that retains its period charm while benefiting from improved energy efficiency. A Nod to Passivhaus Design This beautiful home now embodies the principles of Passivhaus design. By preserving the original stained glass and enhancing the windows' thermal performance, we’ve created a comfortable living environment that reduces energy consumption—ideal for those seeking modern sustainability with a classic touch. If you're considering an upgrade to your own stained glass windows or doors, why not have the best of both worlds? Reach out to us to learn how we can help you transform your home while preserving its unique character. Our customer was over the moon with the finished results, here's what they had to say: "We are over the moon with the end result of our encapsulated stained glass windows. The service provided by Andrew and Benji was brilliant - they are very knowledgeable and clearly enjoy their work which is seen in the end result. Our bay window comprised of stained glass in a curved detail and a large single pane - Andrew and Benji have installed new triple glazed units throughout and they look great. None of the period character has gone but we are already feeling the benefit of the glazing. Thank you for such a good experience."

This year marks a milestone at Christ's Church Harwood as we celebrate a decade since the installation of three stained glass panels. Today we have been back to visit the church to perform some maintenance on the windows; quite literally blowing away the cobwebs. We removed the polycarbonate protection, thoroughly cleaned both the covering and the stained glass before reinstalling the protective sheets. As you can see from the images the windows look as good as new!
The stained glass was originally created in honour of the 175th anniversary of the church, by our most experienced craftsperson; Benj, who you can see cleaning the windows today in our pictures. The brightly coloured window in the Lomax Chapel, designed by Andrew, features an abstract design with orange flames and depicts the outpouring of the spirit, to symbolise the Bible verse ‘I will pour out my spirit on all people.’ The church is planning a special service to commemorate this ten-year milestone, and our stained glass is ready to shine as brilliantly as ever! A Glimpse into John Lennon's Childhood: From the age of 5 until he was 22, John Lennon resided at 251 Menlove Avenue with his aunt and uncle. This unassuming house, nestled in Liverpool, played a significant role in shaping Lennon's musical journey. It was within these walls that Lennon's early creativity flourished, providing the backdrop for the composition of numerous Beatles classics.
The Transformation: In 2002, the house was acquired by Yoko Ono, John Lennon's widow, recognizing its historical importance. Understanding the sentimental value attached to this residence, Yoko Ono made the magnanimous decision to donate the property to the National Trust. This act of generosity ensured that the childhood home of one of the world's most celebrated musicians would be preserved for generations to come. A Tourist Attraction: Since then, 251 Menlove Avenue has been carefully restored and converted into a cherished tourist attraction. Today, visitors from all corners of the globe can embark on a pilgrimage to this hallowed place and immerse themselves in the vibrant history of the Beatles. The house showcases an array of Beatles memorabilia, offering an intimate glimpse into the lives of the band members during their early years. Stained Glass Restoration: As part of our commitment to preserving cultural heritage, we had the honour of restoring the stained glass windows at John Lennon's childhood home. It’s back to school week! And we had a wonderful surprise in store for the pupils and staff at Devonshire Road Primary School. The new stained glass window has been fitted just in time for their first day back after the Summer Holidays. Take a look at the stained glass window and some of the children’s drawings, which inspired the design below. We were contacted back in 2019 to collaborate with the students and staff to create a new stained glass window that reflects the school ethos:
We have been featured in The Bolton News today, with a story about the magical stained glass windows we made during Lockdown last year. Take a read of the article below to learn more:
