Happy New Year from us all at The Stained Leaded Glass Company!
This lovely project was finished just before Christmas, and now, on our first day back in cold, snowy weather, the swallows in the design feel like a promise of spring to come. The customer was delighted with the finished result, and we really enjoyed working closely with them to bring their ideas to life. If you’re considering a stained glass project for your home this year, please feel free to get in touch, we’d love to discuss your ideas.

The daisies were made from hand cut clear and opaque fusing glass and sprinkled with frit (finely ground glass) to create a tactile surface once fired. You can see our Craftswoman Tamsin, who made the daisies standing proudly with the leaning posts in the photos. We think the garden looks beautiful, and feel very privileged to have contributed to it even in a small way. The garden was designed by John Williams from Eco Designs and it was a pleasure to work with him on this project. Many aspects of the garden were made and donated by local artisans and businesses, including: John and Adam from Eco Designs for providing all the architectural design work free of charge. Richard and the team from P R England for completing all the building work and for donating a beautiful wooden bench swing. Anne from The Pottery Studio for creating the beautiful ceramic hospice daisies that have created a great feature for our garden visitors to enjoy. Andrew & Tamsin from The Stained Leaded Glass Company for providing the glass daisies in the wooden posts dotted around the garden free of charge. Everyone at Sherman and Young Timber Merchants for providing the timber used in the wooden leaning posts dotted around the garden free of charge. Peter Walford & Son Electrical for sorting the lighting and electrics for the garden, ensuring it can still be beautifully visible in the dark. Paul from Made Profiles Ltd for providing the stainless steel materials used to create our supporters dedication plaques free of charge. Mark from Etch and Cut for providing the beautiful engraving on the dedication plaques. It can often be said that inspiration can come from the most unexpected of places, and the same can be said for this stained glass panel.
After receiving a lovely Christmas card, our customer was extremely taken with the design on the front, so much so that we used it as inspiration to create a design for some new stained glass. This beautiful piece features a spectrum of blues, including a special glass called flashed glass. This is a kind of glass that is clear with a layer of colour on one side, which we have sandblasted to create stars in the night sky. This is a technique we have used in other projects but we think creates a fantastic effect! The star of the show is a mid flight barn owl, soaring past a glowing full moon with lots wispy glass to create the look of feathers. What wonderful character this window now adds to our customer’s front door, to be enjoyed day or night! As we say goodbye to to the final flutters of summer, we wanted to share a little bit of sunshine (before it disappears for months).
Take a look at this lovely sunflower panel recently completed by our talented craftsperson; Katie. The window features two big sunflowers comprised of some beautiful streaky glass. As you can see, there is a brown glass border which acts as a frame, enhanced by the wispiness of the glass, mimicking a wood grain effect. Our client left us a glowing review: “Brilliant, very helpful from the start, sent photos on emails of colours and designs. Decided to visit the workshop and had a very productive visit. The finished window is even better than we expected. An excellent company.” We think the stained glass is a great addition to our customer’s home, offering up a little slice of summer all year round. Will you miss Summer or are you ready to embrace Autumn?
Once all the panels had been repaired, and cleaned, they were then encapsulated to help further their longevity, protecting them for many years to come. We are currently undertaking more restoration work for this project, so keep your eyes peeled for updates. We love when a stained glass piece tells a story. Have you ever come across one that left a lasting impression on you? Last week we were back working with the National Trust, this time at the stunning NT Speke Hall in Liverpool, where we carried out onsite repairs to its historic leaded windows, using Victorian reclaimed and handmade glass from our archive. Built in 1530 by the Norris family, Speke Hall is a remarkable Tudor house, complete with a moat, striking timber-framed walls and a distinctive gatehouse. Over the centuries it has witnessed periods of change, decline and revival, before finally being entrusted to the National Trust in 1986. We’ve been fortunate to work with the National Trust before – including repairs at John Lennon’s childhood home – and it’s always a privilege to help preserve such treasured places so they can be enjoyed for generations to come. Today we have been working at The Crown Inn, Stockport, the charming historic pub nestled underneath the mighty Stockport Viaduct. Once three terraced houses, it became a pub in the late 19th century and still boasts its beautiful multi-room layout, original bench seating, and stunning glasswork that tells the story of its past. Our team recently carried out onsite repairs to the pub’s stained glass and restored a mirror with over 150 years of history, what a privilege to help preserve such treasured features. The new owners have been hard at work renovating ahead of their reopening this Friday, and we’re delighted they’re so pleased with our craftsmanship. Last year, we had the joy of working with a Stockport Primary School to create stained glass windows featuring famous local landmarks, look closely and you’ll even spot The Crown Inn in the design!
We really enjoy adding personal touches to projects like these and are forever in awe of the imagination of our clients, and the versatility of stained glass. Our customer was delighted with the finished result and left us a glowing review: "Andrew and Bethany and the rest of the team provided a wonderful service from start to finish. I wanted a bespoke circular stained glass window as a surprise for my husband’s birthday. Delivered well within timescales and it exceeded my expectations- I was inspired by Hockney’s window in Westminster Abbey so my expectations were high to say the least . Thank you everyone for an amazing work of art. Recommend them entirely" Just in time for Mother’s Day, we’re proud to share our full restoration of this stunning stained glass panel of Mary, Mother of Jesus, for Loreto College, Manchester. Our talented craftsperson, Tamsin, carefully restored, releaded, and repainted the broken face of young Jesus to bring this historic piece back to life. Now, the stained glass will be showcased in a light box at the college, allowing it to shine at its very best. Swipe through the photos to see the beautiful hand painted pieces!
